The Ontario Chronic Disease
Prevention Alliance is a project of
Strategic Direction

The OCDPA is proposing a comprehensive chronic disease prevention system based on six elements:

  1. Capacity Development: We need to make sure we have the people, programs and funds to prevent chronic disease.
  2. Best Practices Identification: We need to learn from the best and apply what we learn to strengthen chronic disease prevention in Ontario.
  3. Research: We need to stay at the forefront of chronic disease prevention knowledge.
  4. Surveillance and monitoring: We need to know what we’re up against, what the risks are, and to whom.
  5. Evaluation: We need to know what works to prevent chronic disease.
  6. Policy and Program Implementation: We need to act.

The OCDPA is influencing the direction of Ontario’s chronic disease prevention system through the following actions:

  1. Integrating chronic disease prevention into local healthy systems: We will think provincially and act locally.
  2. Developing common, consistent messaging: We will speak with one voice.
  3. Applying learning from tobacco: We will learn from our successes and build on them.
  4. Implementing dose of best practices: We will advocate that programs and practices proven to work are implemented at a level that has an impact.
  5. Addressing health disparities: We will not avoid hard truths in ensuring that the connections between social conditions and chronic disease are understood and addressed.
  6. Undertaking Healthy Eating and Active Living (HEAL) evaluation: We will promote existing chronic disease prevention programs as learning tools.
