| Our Background |
|
The Ontario Chronic Disease Prevention Alliance (OCDPA) was officially formed in February 2003 to address the urgent need for integrated action and collaboration on the issue of chronic disease prevention. Since its formation, the Alliance has provided overviews on the determinants and risk factors for chronic disease development; addressed the economic cost of chronic disease in Canada; and identified the priorities of action in chronic disease prevention. Here are some examples of OCDPA's milestones:
2003
- The Ontario Chronic Disease Prevention Alliance officially forms.
- Nine founding core members sign a Memorandum of Understanding.
- At year end, there are 14 members of the organization.
2004
- Funding support is received from the Public Health Agency of Canada.
- An action plan is developed.
2005
- The organization’s Terms of Reference are ratified and implemented.
- A Chair and vice-chair are elected.
- The OCDPA hosts a Forum on Developing a Chronic Disease Prevention and Healthy Living Strategy for Ontario.
- The OCDPA provides support to the Ontario Chronic Disease Prevention Managers in Public Health.
- The OCDPA produces the report, Informing Direction on Chronic Disease Prevention and Management in Ontario. This report builds on risk factor and chronic disease-based strategies and details related work of OCDPA members and those working within the Ontario Health Promotion Resource System.
2006

- The OCDPA develops the resource Primer to Action in partnership with the Ontario Prevention Clearinghouse and Canadian Cancer Society.
- The OCDPA produces the report Economic Costs of Chronic Disease in Canada 1995-2003, which raises awareness and increases understanding of the financial implications of chronic disease and the huge potential in savings that is possible through investment in health promotion and disease prevention.
- The OCDPA sends out letters to Ontario’s four major political parties urging them to take immediate action and invest in chronic disease prevention in the province.
- The OCDPA completes branding and marketing materials.

The OCDPA Mental Health Working Group produced a handout, Ideas for Organizations to Promote Positive Mental Health, based on ideas from OCDPA membership organizations, to help organizations promote positive mental health.

OCDPA sends a letter to the Minister of Community and Social Services, Minister of Children and Youth Services, and the Social Assistance Review Advisory Council regarding the Social Assistance Rate.

OCDPA releases background documents on its evidence-informed messages that address: high-risk alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, poor mental health, tobacco use/exposure, and unhealthy eating.

OCDPA presents a poster, Proximal Risk Factors for Chronic Disease in Ontario: Challenges and Opportunities of a Comparative Perspective, at the June CPHA Conference.

Through the Healthy Communities initiative, the OCDPA in collaboration with the Ontario Healthy Communities Coalition develops a backgrounder on healthy communities.

CPCHE and OCDPA held a workshop: How might early exposures to Bisphenol-A increase the risk of developing chronic disease, and what can be done about it?

Through OCDPA, several Partner organizations signed on to a statement on Bisphenol-A [PDF: English, French],that was accompanied by a media release [PDF: English, French].

OCDPA
Advocacy Working Group launched the
Better Health is Worth 0.5%
campaign urging the Ontario government to devote 0.5% of the provincial budget towards health promotion in the province.

OCDPA hosted the
Preventing Chronic Disease in Ontario: Panel Discussion Series
featuring panel discussions on each of the five OCDPA evidence-informed messages.

OCDPA launched Dialogue, the revitalized OCDPA newsletter with each issue focusing on one of the five OCDPA evidence-informed messages.
Participation in the OCDPA is open to any organization that supports chronic disease prevention and health promotion in Ontario, supports the mission and guiding principles of the OCDPA, agrees to work together with other members in a collaborative and integrated way, and is a non-profit organization.
